In October 2018 we will once again be participating in the National #SilverSunday celebration which runs throughout the UK and we will be holding another Walking Football Tournament for the over 50’s following 2017’s successful event.
Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Westminster City Councillor Christabel Flight, after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. The aim then was to celebrate older residents, recognise their contribution to their communities and help them get out and about to meet new people.
Silver Sunday 2012 was a fantastic success with over 2,000 people taking part in 19 events in Westminster alone. It gained the support of Joanna Lumley, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Michael Parkinson. The following year the success in Westminster encouraged the organisers to encourage others nationally to get involved; the event grew significantly with over 150 events being held across the country.
Every year since there has been a fantastic growth both in the number of events and in people taking part in Westminster and across the UK, from Orpington to Orkney. In 2016 there were over 600 events attended by thousands of older people.
On Sunday 1st October 2017 we took part in the day by holding a a Walking Football Tournament to highlight our Loneliness in Older People campaign, which supports older people in Worcester. The tournament was held on the 3G pitch at the KGV Community Hub and eight teams with 72 players over 50 took part.
The event was a tremendous success with several people over 50 taking part in the game of Walking Football for the first time. The tournaments was won by Birmingham Walking Football after they defeated local side Hindlip in the Final. The Man of the Tournament award went to Jim McKeever from the Winning Post in Worcester who scored his team’s only goal in his first ever game of Walking Football.
Each game was 10 minutes long with every team playing at least four games with Round Robin Games, 5th and 6th play off, 7th and 8th play off, Semi-Finals, 3rd and 4th place play off and Final. The Results were:
