Throughout COVID-19 lockdown, domestic abuse victims & children in our county have been stuck with their perpetrators with no access to support from our available services. Since lockdown eased, our core agencies have been stretched with a mass wave of referrals from victims who need help. Refuges are continuously full, temporary accommodation is at capacity and over 9% of current homeless applications in our area are from those fleeing domestic abuse.

There are many more victims that need support which is why we are looking to recruit voluntary local Domestic Abuse Champions.

Individuals, groups, professionals & businesses are being called upon to become trained voluntary champions with us to help give a safe space to victims to listen, offer correct advice & options available in Worcestershire. For example a line manager or HR representative can be their business’ trained “DA Champion” contact to offer employees a safe space to talk & get advice. Perhaps a hairdresser may notice abusive texts on their customer’s phone and can be equipped to ask the right questions & offer help.

You may be the only one with access to talk to a victim.

A social response is what victims rely on to make change & stay free and this is what our champions can provide. In turn victims can recognise what abuse is, know their options and take back control. This will then reduce the number of those reaching crisis point. This can help save lives.

Full training on domestic abuse, safety & local options will be provided by our campaign coordinator, Desley.
